It is part of the NRICH Leading Learning: Inspiring Learners series. The first in this series was held on June 19 with a repeat on September 19 as it was so popular. This day is suitable for those who attended Day 1 and also stands alone for those who are new to the series. There are just 50 places available. When: Friday 23 November 2012 Time: 10.00 - 16.00 with coffee and registration from 09.30 Where: London Mathematical Society, De Morgan House, Russell Square, London WC1B 4HS Who: MaST graduates and students plus Mathematics Subject Leaders Investment: £95 per delegate Aim: To support MaST teachers and Mathematics Leaders in nurturing confident, resourceful and enthusiastic teachers and learners of mathematics in their schools.  About the day: The day is a mix of plenary speaker sessions, group discussion and workshops. The day will be highly interactive and will respond to the issues and concerns identified by delegates. • Be inspired about how to develop rich mathematical learning across your school. • Enrich and extend your mathematics provision. • Consider the implications of research findings on children’s mathematical learning. • Come away with strategies to support you in developing mathematical classrooms of enquiry and challenge. Speakers: The NRICH Primary Team at the University of Cambridge: Lynne McClure and Jennie Pennant. The team are primary mathematics and leadership specialists who are committed to enriching the experience of the mathematics curriculum for all learners. Outline of the day 09.30 - 10.00 Registration and coffee 10.00 - 10.15 Introduction and Welcome 10.15 - 11.30 Keynote 1 and discussion Jennie Pennant The Mathematical Needs of Learners This keynote is based on the ACME report ‘Mathematical Needs: the mathematical needs of learners’. Please bring an electronic or paper version with you to the session. It looks at the provision children need in school to support them in becoming independent, confident and capable mathematicians. It also looks at the implications for your school setting and considers strategies that encourage high-quality learning and teaching across whole schools. 11.30 – 11.45 Coffee 11.45 – 13.00 Keynote 2 and discussion Lynne McClure Rich tasks and assessment for learning opportunities This keynote builds on the NRICH article ‘Using Dice games in the classroom'. Please bring an electronic or paper version with you. This keynote looks at how we can use rich tasks to help us understand the children’s emergent mathematical thinking. This helps us plan next steps in the classroom that have the potential to develop meaningful learning. 13.00 - 13.45 Lunch 13.45 - 14.15 Planning an INSET session for colleagues Lynne and Jennie Lynne and Jennie muse on putting together a powerful and engaging CPD session. What are the key elements? What makes a good inset session? 14.15 – 14.45 Take a piece of research Jennie and Lynne From Psychological imprisonment to intellectual freedom – the different roles that school mathematics can take in students’ lives by Jo Boaler. 14.45 – 15.00 Tea 15.00 - 16.00 A choice of two workshops Workshop 1 with Lynne Digging deeper into rich tasks and assessment A chance to explore more NRICH tasks and how they can support assessment of children’s emergent learning Workshop 2 with Jennie Opening up tasks How do we take a task and open it up to make it rich? An opportunity to explore strategies that promote this approach. 16.00 Conference ends During the day there will also be an opportunity to hear about the history of the LMS and the personal stories of some of the eminent mathematicians who are honoured there.
