Heading for Mast Exceptionally Gifted

We have put together here a series of activities that are suitable to use with "Exceptionally Gifted" pupils -   those amazing children we meet every few years whom we all remember because they are fantastic thinkers and show perseverance as well as flair and excitement in the world of mathematics. The activities have been placed in approximate age order starting with  $6$ year olds.

All of these activities have been chosen because, in addition to the staged answers, they lend themselves to the pupil asking "I wonder what would happen if I . . .?" and so there are plenty of opportunities to explore much further.

The adult's role in most is initially minimal, however they all offer opportunities for open questions to be asked at many points in the activity. These open questions help you as the teacher to gain some insight and understanding of how and what the pupil is thinking. Starting with prompting statements like "Tell me about this" can help.

Inky Cube requires a print out but the others do not and so give an opportunity for the pupils to select what resources they would like to use.

Each teacher involved should be encouraged to read the Teachers' Notes associated with each activity first. You may also find it useful to look at the Solution tab where we post children's solutions - many teachers use these with their pupils to prompt further discussion.

One final thing - - these are long activities and plenty of time should be made available.
