Why do this
problem?
This problem gives practice in addition, subtraction and
multiplication in an interesting way which will keep learners
involved for much longer than a page of calculations! It also
requires a systematic approach and illustrates the need to keep
a record of routes already taken.
Key questions
Have you used every number in your route round the maze?
How do you know whether you have tried that way before or not?
Possible extension
Learners could systematically find all
the possible numbers that can be made by going through the maze
in different ways.
Possible support
Some learners might benefit from using a
calculator to find the total for each route they try.
