This problem might be a challenge for younger learners but it allows them to use and think about some of the maths facts that they have learned. It is wonderful for paired or group work. In order to assist children, and to model a valuable problem solving technique, have them find (from ready made manipulatives) or make a set of digit cards from 0 - 9. These can be moved and arranged until each part of the total task is met. The children should then be encouraged to return to the problem and to check each of the conditions against their solution so that they can prove why their solutions works.
