Why do this
problem?
This activity is a simple one that lets the pupils explore
shapes in a straightforward way.
Possible approach
It may be appropriate to have looked at simpler ideas in which
just two or three squares overlap.
Key questions
How have you sorted out those shapes that are squares?
Could you invent a similar question for others to do?
Possible extension
Ask the pupiles to look at the shapes that are generated when
other shapes overlap - like equilateral triangles, regular
hexagons.
Possible support
Some pupils will need an adult to help them to keep focussed on
which squares they've counted and what is left.
